Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy

Orofacial refers to the mouth and face

Myology is the study of the structure, arrangement, and action of the muscles.

Myofunctional therapy aims to retrain the muscles and obtain a normal resting posture for the tongue, lips, and jaw.

Myofunctional therapists work with the muscles of the face and how muscles influence bone growth.

Goals of Myofunctional Therapy

Facilitate nasal/diaphragmatic breathing

Lip Seal

Proper resting posture of the tongue

Proper swallowing pattern

Melvin Moss's Functional Matrix Theory

Bone is grown and remodeled via pressure of soft tissue. Bones respond biochemically, mechanically, and electrically to the stimulation of soft tissue.

As myofunctional therapists, we will work to recover the full functionality of the muscles of the face by treating habits and muscle patterns.
